Jock McFayden
Jock McFadyen ,Tate Moss, 2010.
Another artist that I explored is Jock McFayden, especially his work “Tate Moss” (2010). (Jock McFadyen RA | Exhibition | Royal Academy of Arts). In this work, he paints a derelict, abandoned factory on the grounds of the future London 2012 Olympics, with broken steel-framed windows and a blue sky visible through the brick shell, and a plastic chair hanging from the upper floor. The spray-painted slogan "Tate Moss" could be a satirical commentary on the intersection of art museums and fashion. What I have noticed is the connotation of this building, which ironically commented on its use. As for my own practice, I used the building to establish a connection with the workers and their emotions, ironically attacking the unfairness in this society that is filled with greed and lust.
In April 2022, Jock McFadyen held his solo exhibition 'Tourist without a Guidebook' at the Royal Academy. The collection gathered over 20 of his works and presented a wide range of London's urban landscape. In particular, East London is in a constant state of flux. Here, landscapes and buildings interchange. The graffiti, litter, peeling posters and shop signs allude to the city's inhabitants, whose presence is still felt by the viewer despite their absence from the frame. In the silence and darkness of the paintings, the viewer can feel the presence of the human being. In these works, he allows the buildings to take on human characteristics, such as broken glass, closed doors, graffiti-like scars and a sense of faded grandeur, all showing the lives and occupants in these scenes.
In my work, I also want to use a palette of grey tones to reflect the oppressive and alienating feeling of the city while using 'biomorphic shapes' to show human activities.
